Nicole McLaughlin is a New York-based designer who turned her interest in upcycling into a full-time independent design practice and has just about 800,000 Instagram followers as a result. Dubbed the Instagram Genius, she is an expert at reusing unusual materials. It all started when she found discarded patterns and materials in garbage cans outside her old Reebok office. Curiosity and indignation at waste were the two regressors that awakened their potential.

So now it's back to the roots. McLaughlin took their design specifically from the Etna Mid and took the most important details of the Reebok hiking shoe from the mid-90s into this modern version. The extended fender and small Vector logo catch the eye, while Nicole's namesake is featured on a ribbon appliqué at the ankle. It's not the first time the Etna Mid has found its way onto a modern shoe; Earlier last year, the hiking model served as inspiration for the brand's DMX Trail Shadow Approach.
