Angelo Baque, founder of Awake NY, teamed up with ASICS to create a completely new silhouette earlier this year, the Gel-NYC. Two colorful colorways kicked off, which you can find here and here. The inspiration for the model was taken from existing ASICS models and put two designs together into one. The upper is based on the GEL-NIMBUS 3 of the early 2000s, with design details from the MC-PLUS V. But not only that, the midsole is also dug out of the archive. It was inspired by the GEL-Cumulus 16.

This model relies on a base layer made of mesh and integrates an arrangement of leather inserts in the upper material, foregoing the previously commonly used suede. The lower layers favor the darker of the two aforementioned hues, while the leather elements in the forefoot, along the sides and across the heel shine in a lighter, yet still autumnal hue. Some parts of the GEL-NYC's upper feature a glossy finish that pairs well with the ASICS GEL cushioning underfoot. The areas for stability, traction and additional cushioning are also kept in a deep black, creating a simple look.
