For more than seven years, the Nike Sports Research Lab in Beaverton, Oregon has been working on the Nike Jam. The company brought in professional break dancers so that they could show the designers exactly how they move in their shoes. They even invited a DJ to set the mood. During the film analysis, Nike studied the dancers' movements and measured the impact of their feet on the floor to optimize comfort and energy return. This resulted in a shoe that makes breakdancing as comfortable and responsive as possible.

The design of the shoe is simple and compact, made from a mix of leather and mesh with a rubber sole. The heel loop and lace-up closure are reminiscent of the Nike Metcon, which is designed for high-intensity interval training, including jumping rope, burpees and box jumps - exercises that also require agility and speed. Attention has also been paid to the design: The Jam is stylish enough to wear in everyday life, with an attractive retro look that recalls the roots of breakdancing in the street culture of the 70s and 80s.
