Nike
The name Nike is derived from the ancient Greek word "νίκη" níkē [níːkɛː], meaning 'victory', or Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. The brand was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports and renamed Nike in 1971. The company is based in Beaverton in the US state of Oregon. Nike has been the world's leading supplier of sporting goods since 1989. In mid-2018, it had a market capitalization of 110.3 billion US dollars, making it one of the 100 most valuable companies in the world.
The famous Nike swoosh symbolizes speed and movement through its dynamism. It is also reminiscent of the wings of the goddess Nike. The designer Carolyn Davidson was paid a total of 35 dollars for her work on the logo, which is equivalent to just over 200 dollars today.
The brand is known for many popular shoe models such as the Air Max, Air Force 1 and the Air Jordan 1 and equips various top athletes with its products.
