See allThe Autry sneaker - "the shoe with the American flag" is back
Do you love the vintage style from the 1980s and value high-quality shoes that not everyone has? With the relaunch of the classic Autry sneaker, the former Texas-based manufacturer delivers a trendy retro look with the latest technology in top quality - an absolute highlight for all sneaker fans!
Autry not only celebrated its comeback with a new edition of the original Medalist tennis shoe, but also launched other models and its own clothing collection - and that's certainly not the end of the story!
We have taken a closer look at the lifestyle brand for you and take a look at the company and, of course, the hottest model.
About Autry
Tennis pros and lots of aerobics videos with colorful leggings and sweatbands - that's what defined the 1980s alongside mullets and roller skates. Texan Jim Autry founded a sports label in Dallas in 1982 with precisely this vibe and managed to quickly become one of the most successful sports brands in the USA with Autry.
With his Autry Medalist, he created an all-rounder for the fitness trend of the 1980s that not only hit the mark visually, but was also able to meet sporting demands thanks to the latest technology. It was no longer just a functional sports shoe, but became an absolute fashion icon. The Medalist could be seen in cheeky advertising campaigns and even in Hollywood films.
In addition to the high quality standards and modern technology, the Autrys owe their popularity above all to their logo: a retro lettering with the American flag.
The comeback
After the death of Jim Autry, the legendary tennis-style shoes went quiet for a long time - until three Italian entrepreneurs successfully relaunched them in 2019 with the new Autry Medalist.
With bright colors, new silhouettes and a clothing line, the vintage-look Autry shoes are mingling with the streetwear brands and building on the successes of the 1980s.
The company's headquarters have also changed: The headquarters of the former Texan manufacturer is now in Italy, while Autry shoes are produced in Indonesia.
Top seller: The Autry Medalist
Rarely does a shoe enjoy such success over decades as the Autry Medalist. Bright colors and different leathers provide a fresh touch, but in no way steal the show from the classic look. Because that's exactly what makes it special: the nostalgic flag, thick sole and silhouette are fully in line with the vintage trend. The idea behind the Autry sneaker was to create an all-rounder that is suitable for more than just one sport. In true 1980s style, it was to be the right footwear for tennis players as well as aerobics fans and runners. This meant moving away from the classic, rather thin tennis sole to a more stable shoe with perfect support.
Optically, the classic version of the sneaker from the 1980s is made entirely of white leather. The fairly wide sole ensures a good stance and gives the shoe a real retro feel, not least thanks to the yellowish color. Of course, the practical mudguard and perforated toebox are a must for a formerly functional sports shoe. Both are also made of white leather and visually separated from the rest of the shoe by seams.
Even today, the yellow sole adds the finishing touch to the retro look and is characteristic of the entire Autry range. Colorful leather and fine details add a special touch to the Autry women's sneakers in particular, making them a must-have. There are also many single-colored versions of the Autry women's sneakers, which have their very own character. The Autry sneakers for men only occasionally differ from the Autry women's sneakers in terms of color. The sneakers are timeless and at the same time so versatile that they go with almost any outfit.
In addition to the Autry Medalist, there are 3 other silhouettes. The Autry Dallas is generally simpler and designed more for casual wear. The white leather is only complemented by a colorful back cap, giving the shoe a very subtle look. The Bob Lutz range is similar to the Dallas, but here the sole stands out much more from the white leather thanks to its more intense yellow color. The highlight is of course the graphic of tennis player Bob Lutz on the tongue of the sneaker. The Autry Open sneaker, on the other hand, is bulkier and has a more vintage character. Bright colors complement the white leather and add that certain something.
The success of Autry
What makes Autry so successful is primarily due to the classic design of their sneakers. Back then, Jim Autry had the right instinct and enough courage to turn the traditional tennis shoe into a timeless all-rounder, giving the company a truly unique selling point. The new designers are building on this and using details to bridge the gap between the 1980s look and modern trends - respect!
But it's not just the design that has played a big part in the brand's success. The high quality standards make the classic Autry sneakers not only a stylish lifestyle shoe, but also a high-quality and functional sports shoe. The wider silhouette and thick sole ensure optimum support and a good fit. But don't worry - thanks to the lining and soft rubber, it is still comfortable and provides good cushioning.
The Super Vintage Medalists are a particular highlight. Various techniques are used to give the shoes a used look by hand, making each pair unique. The work is very detailed and even the laces are given a frayed look. The Super Vintage Medalist Autry green with gray, for example, is highly coveted.
Autry - high level vintage
The second spring of the Autry sneakers may have been unexpected, but it was by no means a coincidence: the combination of design, quality and comfort is just right down to the last detail - and does without any hype or frippery.
The decision to stick to the timeless base and expand it with modern variants was exactly right and captures the vintage vibe of our time. With the addition of 3 more silhouettes and clothing to the Medalist, Autry has broadened its positioning and is well on its way to becoming one of the hottest lifestyle brands.
High quality and high-quality workmanship meet timeless design - we like!
