The Nike Air Jordan always manages to make you part of this legendary success story. In the early 80s, Nike didn't even play a role in the NBA. Back then, adidas and Converse were the dominant players. This was soon to change in 1984 with the signing of the then 21-year-old Michael Jordan. The young talent himself originally wanted to join market leader adidas, but every professional athlete has his price. 440,000 dollars for advertising campaigns and a percentage share of the sale finally changed Michael Jordan's mind. Michael Jordan himself would never have imagined that the former NBA star would still be earning annual revenues today that are in no way comparable to those during his career. Yet it was his own person in particular that contributed to this enormous success.
HOW IT WENT ON?
Even before a single Nike Air Jordan hit the shelves, Michael Jordan caused a major scandal in 1985. The rules were different back then. "White" was worn on the foot on the pitch. Color experiments were taboo. However, this did not prevent Michael Jordan from playing in the club colors of his team - the Chicago Bulls. The "Nike Air Ship", the mother of the Nike Air Jordan so to speak, paved the way for an unprecedented run of success in a combination of black and red. Even today, opinions are divided and nobody knows for sure whether the whole thing was just a grandiose marketing campaign. What is undisputed, however, is that 1985 marked the beginning of a new era and the Nike Air Jordan made its way out of the gym and onto the streets of the world's major cities. As the chronology suggests, the Air Jordan I was the first to sell in 1985 and 1986. However, after the release of the Jordan II, Michael Jordan was on the verge of terminating his contract with Nike. But then Nike's design legend Tinker Hatfield came into play and completely redesigned the Air Jordan. In the end, this convinced Michael Jordan to stick with Nike. Air Jordan became a global brand at the latest with the release of the IV. The first worldwide release appeared in several colorways, which of course also led to much wider sales.
